Thomas Mahowald

Thomas Alan Mahowald, age 67, returned to the loving arms of God on May 24th after a lengthy battle with leukemia. He is survived by the love of his life and devoted wife of 45 years, Mary Jo, sons, John and Tim (Libby), beloved grandchildren, Miguel and Mateo, mother, Eileen, sisters, Pat (Jeff Theroux) and Carol Vissers, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Wilfred, his brother-in-law, Robert Vissers, and nephew, Scott Skrypek.

Tom was an optimistic and gregarious individual who loved life and the outdoors with biking, hiking, and golf being favorite pastimes. He was a 30-year member and former board representative of Midland Hills Country Club. He and Mary Jo had a wide circle of close friends in Minnesota, Arizona, and around the country. He was a particularly proud graduate of St. John's University and had a brotherhood of lifelong friends from college.

Professionally, he spent his career in healthcare management with physician professional associations, pharmacy benefit managers, and several national and local health plans, including UCare, where he retired as a senior vice president. Tom lived what he viewed as a charmed existence and saw his illness as a transition to eternal life.

A gathering for all who knew and loved Tom will take place on Wednesday, May 31st from 5-7pm at Midland Hills CC in Roseville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Odilia Catholic Church in Shoreview on Thursday, June 1st at 11am. Mass will be preceded by a gathering of family and friends at the church beginning at 10am. Interment will take place at St. John's University directly following Mass.

In lieu of flowers and in honor of his beloved grandsons, donations preferred to Holy Spirit Catholic School in St. Paul.
