Steven Patrick Hern, 72, of Hugo, MN, passed away on August 30, 2026 in Minneapolis. Born on June 19, 1954 in Kansas City, MO, to Guadelupe and JoEllen (Brasfield) Hernandez.

He graduated from Romeo High School in Romeoville, IL and DeVry College and worked as a Controls Engineer for at least 50 years at multiple companies. He also owned his own business Hern Engineering and Controls. He loved his work. He enjoyed taking things apart and putting them back together to see how they worked. He was a gifted engineer and was always teaching people about systems.

Steve loved the Chicago Bears (Go Bears!), the Yankees, animals of all kinds, camping and being outdoors, spending time with his kids and grandkids, exploring new places, and good company. He will be remembered for his kindness, warmth, humor, extraordinary optimism, adventurous spirit, his ability to make friends anywhere and everywhere, and his total devotion to Sylvia, his BFF.

He is survived by Sylvia (Bober) Hern, children Josh (Jessica) Hern, Andrea (Eric) Cahill, Kristy (Tom) Hern, grandchildren Zachary and Eleanor Hern, Fiona, Audrey, and Dylan Cahill, siblings Rachel (Tom) Perek, Tony (Deborah) Hernandez, Barbara (Javier) Guerrero, and multiple nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Guadelupe and JoEllen Hernandez, siblings Theresa Hernandez, Ray Hernandez, Victoria (Hernandez) Lopez.

Service will be held on Thursday, September 3, 2026 at 11am at St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church, 4741 Bald Eagle Ave, White Bear Lake, with visitation one hour prior at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the American Cancer Society.
