Proud Italian American and life-long St. Paul Eastsider, Ottavio Savina ("Otto, Jr.", "Sam") passed away peacefully after a six-year struggle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents Ottavio (Otto, Sr.) and MariaDomenica DaBruzzi Savina, siblings Julia (Richie), Laura (Schuweiler), Robert, Sr., and Lillian (Siraco), brother-in-law Louis Schuweiler, nephews George A. Richie and Robert A. Richie, niece Karen Siraco, grandnephew Thomas Nakanishi, friend Michael Perry, and his cat Precious. He is survived by best friend Dean Andrew, sister-in-law Patricia Savina, brothers-in-law George E. Richie and John Siraco, many nieces and nephews, grand, great-grand, and great great-grand nieces and nephews. Also survived by dear cousins both in America and Italy, dear friends Donald and Patricia Garofalo, and lastly, his incredible, cuddle-loving cat Luigi! Ottavio was a graduate of Johnson High School and the University of MN and for 34 years was a public high school teacher in Dodge Center and Brooklyn Center, Minnesota. He served on the executive board of the ESNDC and was a volunteer tutor for the East Side Learning Center as well as serving on their board. His passions were music, dancing, travel, gardening, genealogy, winter and water skiing, March Madness, Christmas, meeting family and friends for breakfast, lunch or dinner, and everything Italian. He sang in the choirs of St. Ambrose Catholic Church. He wanted to thank his oncology team at the U of MN, and dear family and friends who supported him with prayers and best wishes over the last few years. Special thanks to the gentle and caring staff of The Pillars Hospice Home. A visitation will be held on Sunday, October 15 from 3:00-7:00 PM at Mueller Mortuary, 835 Johnson Pkwy, St. Paul. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Church of the Assumption, 51 7th St. W., St. Paul on Monday, October 16 at 10:00 AM. A one-hour visitation will precede the Mass.

 

Contributions can be made to the East Side Learning Center or TPT - Twin Cities PBS.
