Listen to Obituary

With heavy hearts and deep gratitude for a life well lived, we announce the passing of Michael "Mike" Cherrier, age 79, a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, great-grandfather, loyal brother, uncle, cousin, and a cherished friend. Mike grew up in Mahtomedi, Minnesota, where much of his childhood was spent on the shores of White Bear Lake. Lake Life was in his blood! Mike attended St. Jude's Catholic School, Hill-Murray Junior High and High School, and graduated from Mahtomedi High School.

During these formative years, he met the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Kathleen, who became his devoted wife and partner throughout life's many adventures.

After high school, Mike attended St Cloud University. In 1967, he proudly enlisted in the United States Navy (SEABEE)and was assigned to Argentia, Newfoundland in utilities. Served in Vietnam, in 1969 in Sadec, BinhTui, CanTho. His last duty was CamRahn Bay and then transferred to Navel reserve.

Upon completion of Military service, Mike entered Dunwoody trade school and worked for Pastour Interprises/ Whirlpool. In1972, Mike was careered in United States Postal service where he worked in logistics and procurement of Nation and international mail operations (contracts for military air securities.) His work took him to Atlanta, Georgia, and eventually Washington, D.C., where he and Kathy spent many memorable years living along the beautiful shores of Chesapeake Bay. There Mike continued to enjoy his love for boating whether on the water of White Bear Lake, Lake Lanier in Georgia, the Chesapeake, or Balsam Lake, WI. He found peace, joy, and connection in being on the water.

In 2001, after 30 years with the USPS, Mike retired. Upon retirement, Mike and Kathy resided in Balsam Lake, WI. While there, Mike continued to work within the community at Endeavors Adult Development Center. He worked with clients and created a meaningful bridge to the community by establishing the first product of bird seed and feeders. This creation financially supported the Center.

Mike and Kathy replanted their roots in White Bear Lake, MN in 2013. Mike continued to work and serve in the community as he drove school bus for the White Bear Lake District. Mike found enjoyment with kids with special needs and their families. They kept a cherished place in his heart. "Mike is the BEST bus driver!"

In Mike's off time, his hobbies included wood working, crafting, thrifting, ebay, and tending his tomato garden.

Mike cherished every moment spent with all his grandchildren. He rarely missed a sporting event, band concert, choir performance, or milestone that involved each grandchild. From cheering them in the stands to spending sunny afternoons fishing and boating together. He created memories that his grandchildren will carry with them forever and leave behind a legacy of love, encouragement, and unwavering support.

Mike made a difference every day and in every way. He set examples to work hard, live fully, and give freely. Very generous with his time, he shared acts of kindness and thoughtfulness for others. Our dad taught us to model integrity and hard work with honesty and good humor. He was committed to making certain his family felt safe, happy, and cared for. Thank you, Dad, for all the years you have given your entire life to our country, work, and family.

Mike is survived by his wife Kathleen, his children Ken (Jess), Shannon, Jeanette (Tim); his grandchildren Kaitlyn, Logan, Jacob, Evan, Jack; and his great-grandchildren Brecken and Noah. He is also survived by his brothers, Joe (Shelly) and Steve (Lisa); his sister Carol Flannery; and many dear nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends both near and far. Preceded in death by parents Melvin and Theresa; and brother Patrick.

Mike was a committed husband and dad. He always made certain that his family felt safe, happy, and cared for.

Some things never change like love, memory, and the legacy of a life that meant so much.
