She graduated from Tartan High School in 1989 and attended college at the University of Minnesota in the Twin Cities, graduating in 1995. In her elementary and high school years, she actively participated in the Greater Twin Cities Youth Orchestra and her high school band including both jazz band and marching band. She was also active with the Woodbury Baptist Youth Group and loved to recall the stories of canoe trips to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. After gaining a degree in computer science she was gainfully employed in the industry for 28 years beginning at Siemens, US West, Lockheed Martin, and United Health Group and its various subsidiaries. She was passionate about her work and was a student of each role she held from working the drive-up window at Burger King, to managing databases, to running engineering leadership development programs, to evangelizing the Agile mindset of software and product development. She married her husband Bill Fischer in 1997, and together they have two children, Sam and Matt Fischer. As a family, they enjoyed traveling - especially all things Disney - also camping, and attending activities for band, scouts and lacrosse to support and cheer on Sam and Matt. She was extremely proud of them. She was an avid University of Minnesota Gopher fan and enjoyed many craft hobbies including sewing, embroidery, and scrapbooking.
