John "Jack" Lawrence Schwietz III, 80, of White Bear Lake, Minnesota, passed away on September 23, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Jack was born on August 1, 1945, to parents John and Catherine (née Garvey) Schwietz of St. Paul. He grew up on the East Side of St. Paul and graduated in 1963 from Hill High School (now Hill-Murray), where he formed a crew of lifelong friends he cherished.
In 1967, Jack married Patricia "Pat" Melander, and together they shared 58 years of marriage. He was a loving husband, father, grandpa, brother, uncle, and friend.
To his five grandchildren he was known simply as "Bop." In fact, he became "Bop" to many friends and extended family. He was a dedicated chauffeur when they were little, an avid football, baseball, lacrosse and gymnastics fan during their Mahtomedi Zephyr years, and a proud grandpa through their college years and into their professional lives.
He will be remembered for his love of family, loyalty to friends (especially those from Hill High School), enthusiasm for anything related to his grandchildren, and his ability to deliver the perfectly timed quip-right up until the day he passed.
Jack is survived by his loving wife, Pat; son John (Becki); daughter Kate (Chad Jacoboski); grandchildren Jack (fiancée Erika), Andy, Will, Ben, and Riley; brothers Patrick (Pat) and Dennis (Kelly); sisters Mary Duquesnes and Joanne (John) Micu; brother-in-law Harry (Mary) Melander; sister-in-law Barb Melander; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. He will be deeply missed by his Friday morning breakfast club-John, John, Tony, Don, Don, and Bob-at Joseph's in St. Paul.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Catherine.
A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, October 1 at Mueller Memorial, White Bear Lake (4738 Bald Eagle Avenue), from 4-7 p.m.
Funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 2 at St. Jude of the Lake Church in Mahtomedi (700 Mahtomedi Avenue) at 11:00 a.m. (visitation at 10:00 a.m.), followed by lunch from 12:30-2:30 p.m. at Joseph's Grill in St. Paul (Wabasha and Plato).
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to Hill-Murray High School in Jack's memory.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the nurses, aides, and physicians of Regions Hospital/Health Partners, the caregivers at Beyond Hospice in Oakdale, and the many friends who supported Jack's care over the past four weeks with empathy, kindness, and love.
