Long, James Martin "Jim", 85, of White Bear Township, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2025 in his home surrounded by loved ones. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Cathy "DoDo"; children, Lisa (Dave) Opatz, and Jimmer; grandchildren, Sam Opatz, Travis (Kayla), and Jacob (Mia); great- grandchildren, Owen, Colton, and Haizel; sister, Gloria "Nellie" Folsom; and other family and friends.
Jim was a Harding High School graduate and was an accomplished gymnast during his high school years, reaching the state level. He spent his career as a switchman with Burlington Northern Railroad, where his love for trains started. Jim was a proud Navy veteran, often seen sporting his Navy hat, a reminder of his service and commitment. He was a lifelong Minnesota sports fan, he loved cheering for the Vikings and Twins, Jim was a very creative and talented woodworker. He and Cathy would create wood crafts together and often sell their creations at local craft shows.
Family meant the world to Jim. He taught his three grandkids how to drive, creating lasting memories that will be treasured forever. Jim's presence will be greatly missed.
A funeral mass will be held at 10 AM on Tuesday, August 12, 2025 at Church of the Assumption, 51 West 7th St, St. Paul, MN 55102, with visitation beginning at 9 AM at the Church and also from 4-7 PM on Monday, August 11, 2025 at Mueller Memorial- White Bear Lake, 4738 Bald Eagle Ave. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the family.
